REFLECTION 1

Today in the town of David a Saviour has been

born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby,

keeping watch over their flocks at night.

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory

of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring

you good news that will cause great joy for all the

people.

Today in the town of David a Saviour has been

born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a

sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths

and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly hosts

appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth

peace to those on whom his favour rests.”

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven,

the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to

Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened,

which the Lord has told us about.”

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and

the baby, who was lying in a manger. When they had

seen him, they spread the word concerning what had

been told them about this child, and all who heard it

were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered

them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying

and praising God for all the things they had heard and

seen, which were just as they had been told.

Relax Your Body …

Relax your body.

Select a space, your space, where you can be undisturbed, a comfortable chair, or lie prone on the floor.

Relax your mind.

Put aside the cares of your work

your interests

your plans for the future

your worries of yesterday.

Select SILENCE, QUIET, SOLITUDE

God speaks to us in silence and quiet.

Recall that God is present HERE, NOW,

in the deepest recesses of my heart

dwelling down deep in this chamber of self sustaining me in existence

aware of me

knowing all things.

God is present in this quiet

this peace

graciously present

present in the Holy Spirit.

There is no turbulence in God.

nothing threatening

nothing frantic or hectic

nothing judgmental

no condemnation

only calm

only peace

only quiet

only gentleness

only harmony

only concern

only compassion

only encouragement

only invitation

only courtesy

Ask for a GRACE …. to be open

to be more deeply aware

of God’s great love for me

Love is, in fact, the most powerful of all energies.

That’s why it has a unique power to HEAL.

The story of the 2 newborn infants shows you the power of love —even the love of a tiny infant.

It’s a true story.

A mother gave birth to 2 twin babies.

One was strong and healthy. But sadly, the other infant was weak and ill.

In fact, she was dying.

A nurse decided to place the two infants side by side.

Immediately she did this, the stronger infant put her arm around the sick one.

This simple act proved to be a turning point.

The ill infant began to gain strength.

She got well.

The loving, physical act of being embraced by her infant sister had initiated a process of healing within her!

LOVE was healing her.

LOVE had restored her to LIFE!

As you reflect on these 11 brief meditations, ask the Lord to help you FEEL His love embracing you just like the newborn infant experienced it.

I have already asked the Lord to do that for you.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Do you see?

The Lord is pleading for YOUR friendship!

This is precisely why He became a human being.

You see, in order to save you, He had first to establish a friendship with you.

And He could best do this by taking on a human form just like you. In this way, you would be able to relate to Him as FRIEND, not just as your Saviour.

A friend is someone who walks side by side with you.

God wants to walk side by side with you.

That’s exactly what ‘Emmanuel’ means: ‘God with us’.

God becomes your friend before, during, and after He saves you!

That’s how much your friendship matters to Him.

Remember how He took time to make friends with the Samaritan woman at the well before He extended salvation to her?

And how he asked Zaccheus to take Him to his house so He could first become Zaccheus’ friend? Only then did Jesus extend salvation to the house of Zaccheus.

So … your prayer is, in essence, the chance to take advantage of the Lord’s friendship with you and of your friendship with Him.

And when friends meet up they converse, right?

To pray is to have a conversation with your Friend.

And when cherished friends converse, they take turns talking and listening.

It’s a 2-WAY exchange.

You and your friend take turns LISTENING!

This is exactly why, when you pray with your heart,

you make a conscious decision beforehand to stop doing all the talking and instead give the Lord the chance to speak —to tell you what He wants to tell you AND to give you all the many blessings He has for you!

No friendship can survive one-way conversations!!

As you listen to this next carol…

The ripple effects of opening yourself regularly to the Lord’s love have the power to CHANGE a severely wounded world of hate, anger and violence into a world healed by LOVE.

As you allow the Lord to fill you regularly with His love (this happens automatically when you pray with and from your heart), you WANT to share this love with others!

This is all to the good.

Why?

Because you retain God’s love best by giving it away.

And when you give away the Lord’s love to others who might need it even more than you, you HEAL the world, person by person.

Listen to what Jesus says about LOVE:

“The most important one”, Jesus answered, “is this:

‘Hear O Isreal: the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all

your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is

this:’ Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

Do you think you got into God’s kingdom of love on your own?

It could be.

But I think it’s perhaps more likely that one or more individuals prayed you there —people you might never meet in this lifetime.

You might want to thank the Lord now for these individuals!

In the same way, you might never know in this life the identity of the people to whom you send or have sent God’s love!

But the Lord knows —and He blesses you richly for spending time in His presence and then sharing with others the special love you have received while there.

Take a moment to look at the tree and its young shoot in the picture above.

See how strongly they are bonded to each other?

Each time you spend time in the Lord’s direct presence, even if only for a few minutes each day, you bond strongly to the One who IS Love and He bonds to you.

You bond strongly to the one who IS Life.

You bond to the Lord FROM THE VERY FIRST SECOND that you enter into God’s presence.

I want you to always remember that.

It might take a while to notice a difference in yourself and in your life, and to start to experience the multitude of benefits that automatically ensue from spending regular time in the Lord’s presence.

But after 2 or 3 weeks of praying in this way for 5 – 10 minutes each day, you WILL start to see the benefits.

And when for any reason you miss out on a few days of this way of praying, you will quickly realize that something very helpful and affirming in your life is missing.

Letting go of words and thoughts allows the Lord and you to bond far more deeply than in the usual way of praying with words.

This way of praying is a totally reliable way to ‘remain in the Lord’s love’.

And when you remain in the Lord’s love, you draw life and nourishment from Him.

The quality of your life increases in ways you would not have expected.

Love is the Source of ALL life.

Without love your faith is of no value whatsoever (1 Corinthians 13)!

This is why the devil constantly tries to destroy God’s love in you. He knows that once he destroys the love of God within you, he destroys your faith and your life itself.

But the good news is that love has the power needed to conquer ALL evil.

This is why the Holy Spirit has placed the amazing gift of God’s love right smack inside you.

This is why when we share love with others we neutralize the evil that is present in the world.

REFLECTION 9

Keeping Yourself Rooted and Established in Love

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have the power …to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge —that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Epesians 3: 17 – 19 NIV

If you are experiencing inner pain or trauma this Christmas, please don’t run from your pain.

Instead …

Ask the Lord to enter into your experience of pain
Resolve to spend just 5 -10 minutes each day in God’s presence

There, you WILL AUTOMATICALLY receive the Lord’s healing LOVE.

You don’t have to DO anything.

You don’t have to THINK or SAY anything!

You see, it’s IMPOSSIBLE to be silent in the Lord’s presence and NOT receive His love!!

We haven’t always understood HOW to pray without words and thoughts. We assume that we have to TALK all the time when we pray!

But talking all the time prevents us from receiving IN FULL what God wants so passionately to give us: namely, His love and His peace.

You have only to take a tiny leap of faith and believe that the Lord honours

the time you’ve put aside to spend silently in His
your decision to let go of the usual words and thoughts

He honours these by blessing you with His healing LOVE and PEACE.

This is the way to face your pain hand-in-hand withGod.

Jesus said you would have troubles in this world but that He had given you the strength to overcome them.

When you enter into God’s presence, YOU become the baby bird.

You open your heart (your heart is not just your emotions but is really your whole being —your conscience, will, decision-making centre, thoughts, words, actions, imagination, and emotions —far more fully to God by learning to let go of your usual thoughts and words.

Then the Lord, just like the mother bird, gives himself to you —deeply, fully, without reserve, so that you lack for nothing!

When you receive God’s love, you lack for nothing. You receive the nourishment the Lord knows that you need to sustain your mind, body and spirit.

Here’s the exchange:

You give Him 5 – 10 minutes of silent time each day (less time than it takes to drink a cup of coffee) and an open heart.

He gives you Himself:

- - His love
  - His rest (peace)
  - His life

At this point, like the baby bird, you can now fly by yourself.

You now have something to give others.

You have what it takes to nourish others (your enemies included!) with God’s amazing Love!

This is what you and I have been created for —to love and to be loved!

Make a copy of the image of the mother feeding the baby bird and and keep it in a place where you can easily see it.

On the first Christmas day, Jesus came to feed and nurture you in this life as you journey on with and to Him.
